Our Mazda 2 (2016 1.5D) has recently started banging from the rear suspension whilst going over bumps and potholes. After a quick pot
hole laden road test I narrowed it down to the nearside shock. On closer inspection the bump stop has split in half and the plastic dirt cover moves up and down freely.
Has anyone else had this issue? I presume I need to replace the bump stops and that it's best to do both sides. Can I just buy the bump stops and reuse the dirt covers? Would it be prudent to change the rear shocks at the same time (car is at 80,000 miles).
Any advice, help or part numbers would be appreciated.
No luck finding the parts on Autodoc or from a reliable local motor factors. Parts ordered from Main dealer at £42.73 + VAT. Special order from Belgium and the parts guy said they had never sold or ordered this item before. Guess I have just been unlucky?
Well the parts arrived and for the sum of £42.73 I have got one new bump stop and attached dirt cover for the shock. I thought I had ordered a pair for this price but he ho!
Removed the old shock (2 chassis nuts are 14mm, bottom bolt is 17mm and shock top nut is 12mm). I found that the bump stop had fully sheared at the joint with the dust cover and then again was about 75% about half way to the top. The offside on looks to be almost sheared as well.
The car is just over 8 years old, so if the design is the same as the CX-3 then at this age your bump stops will be shot and need replacing. If you are planning on doing your rear shocks then you probably need to budget for bump stops as well. I assume it would be an MOT advisory not a failure but you never know!
What annoys me is that you can't just buy the bump stop on its own and reuse the dirt cover. The bump stop looks like a £5 piece of rubberised foam.
End of saga. Both bump stops replaced for £80 and two hours of my spanner time. Is see on eBay you can buy generic bump stops for about £15 a pair which may or may not fit. I was not prepared to take a gamble and have the car lying around in bits.
Next on the list will be rusty brake pipes and rust on the top mounts of both rear springs. Bad design where mud can just build up and start the corrosion process. Has anyone had to replace their brake pipes (both front and rear were MOT advisories this March) and if so how much did it cost?
