Hi
First post here, I’ve been browsing before joining but couldn’t see anything about my issue.
I have 1.5 diesel skyactive sport nav 2017 plate. Bought in January with 20k on the clock and 11 months MOT. Car has been great to drive, done about 13k commuting to work on motorway and dual carriageway so gets a good run daily.
Went in for MOT last week and failed on emissions. Garage advised to put cleaner in with a tank of premium diesel and take for a decent drive in 4th gear at around 3000 revs. Did that and went back next with engine hot for a retest. They did the emissions and it failed again but reading was lower so we assumed it would take a few more days to get emissions level down to passable level.
Took it to another place do do another test, they know me so agreed to do emissions first and it failed again. They found the tailpipes are full of soot so their first thought was that the DPF is dead. However there have been no warning lights or anything to suggest it’s an issue. MPG and performance has been steady for the 11 months I’ve had it. Although the car did go back to the trader I got it from after 2 weeks as there was an O2 sensor issue.
Has anyone experienced anything similar with their CX3? I’ve seen a lot of discussions about DPF regens.
One thought now is that the car my have had the DOF removed and engine mapped so it’s going in tomorrow to have engine diagnostics run to look for any fault codes or modifications.
Engine Emissions Issue
That was my first thought that the DPF has been physically removed and the ECU remapped. Have you been aware of the DPF actually regenerating? Signs of this are increased engine/turbo noise, increased smoke from the exhaust, a drop in MPG, the stop start shows as "NOT READY" and if you stop part way thru a regen, then the cooling fans kick in.
I am sure diesels don't have O2 sensors, so it might have been a different sensor?
Other possible causes of high emissions could be a faulty injector, carbon build up or an Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve fault.

I don’t recall it showing any of those signs of regen Percy247.
I drove it over 100 miles yesterday on a mix of A roads and motorway. Display showed the blue halos and Istop ready consistently the whole journey with Istop kicking in on the few stops we had a traffic lights. So all seemed to work as it should and no DPF warning or any other lights.
I was expecting it would try and regen given the state of the emissions but nothing. The exhaust did emit grey smoke when I pushed the revs up going through 3rd and 4th gear. Car did avg 60mpg according to the fuel economy data on the info screen.
I’ve noticed on an old MOT emissions sheet from last year and my current ones that they say ‘no manufacturer plate’ I assume that’s the sticker most cars have normally somewhere under the bonnet that tells the emissions level. Can’t see one on my car, so wonder if it got removed, do you know where it should be

There is plate on the sill of the drivers door but I am not sure if that will say anything about emissions usually just model and engine.
When the DPF Is regenerating the blue halo goes off on the engine icon and not ready appears in the fuel economy app.
These engines suffer badly from carbon build up in the inlet manifold. This will be worse in a low mileage car that has been used for lots of short journeys. If the garage removes the shiny horizontal pipe at the front of the engine they can quickly check the state of carbon build up in the inlet manifold and EGR.
Grey smoke under load is usually excess unburnt fuel which confirms the high emissions. My DPF regens about every 120 miles on average and the garage should be able to access DPF regen history via a diagnostic scan tool. This should confirm whether the DPF is active or not. If the filter has been removed from the DPF there will be signs of welding and grinding on the casing.
Let us know how you get on to increase the knowledge base on here. I do remember someone else posting on here who bought a cx3 that had it's DPF gutted. I will try and find the thread. Good luck

Found the thread but like lots of times on here people either don't come back or post a final outcome!

Thanks, I saw that thread when I was looking around the forum for DPF issues.
Dropped the car off about 30 mins ago. Told them it had done a couple of hundred miles over the weekend with no sign of a regen. Also mentioned the bad injector issue.
They’re pretty certain it’s a DPF issue so hopefully the diagnostics will give some answers.
Sat waiting for an update.
The extra bad news is the DPF is on 6 week back order and with Christmas & New Year so close I’m guessing it’ll be Feb sometime before one is available.
Car is out of MOT so now I need to buy another car to get to work while I wait for this to get sorted…..after forking out £5k 2 weeks ago for new central heating because that broke.

There are specialist companies who professionally clean DPFs for a fraction of the cost of a new DPF. They physically remove it from the car and clean It.Rosie123 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:55 am Thanks, I saw that thread when I was looking around the forum for DPF issues.

It could be a DPF issue like you say but without any warning lights that seems strange unless someone has been messing about with it. This coupled with the alleged changing of an O2 sensor that diesel cars dont have sets alarm bells ringing for me.

So garage diagnostics suggest car has had DPF mapped out. Now with Mazda dealer for further investigation but they said they will be able to get codes off system and will need mapping specialist to look at them to see if anything or what has been done. They also can’t remap it so it would need to go to a specialist for that
Garage said the readings for the exhaust sensors either side of the dpf were 600 and dpf reading was -1 which suggests there is nothing there so the car is running hot to try and compensate. They also saw evidence that the car was trying to regen but had nothing to regen.

Mazda dealer has confirmed that the car has been mapped to bypass the DPF. They are running an update which should reset it and also give codes for about the injectors which looks to be why it was mapped.
They can’t guarantee that it will pass the emissions once done but I guess I don’t have much option but to try.

Sounds like a boatload of grief but you seem to be making progress to sort it out hopefully. Has the DPF just been mapped out or physically removed as well?
Sadly, when DPF issues hit cars these days some people sort them out properly but the unscrupulous minority make illegal short term fixes just get rid of the car and pass the problem on to the next unsuspecting owner.
